First Results:Mainz, 23.04.2010 The CARIBIC instrument container took-off on board the Lufthansa Airbus A340-600 to measure the volcanic cloud stretching between Germany and southern Scandinavia, on Tuesday, Apr. 20. The measured levels of ash particles from the Eyjafjallajökull volcano were generally low. A newly installed Optical Particle Counter (IfT Leipzig)used to identify the size distribution was deployed for the first time. Other instruments measured various trace gases and air samples. A few aerosol samples were collected for further laboratory analyses. The container, that is usually operating on regular Lufthansa flights to investigate the atmosphere, was prepared for this special mission in two days. A press conference will take place on April 29 at the Max-Planck-Institute in Mainz, to show the container laboratory in cooperation with Frankfurt airport (FRAPORT) who sponsored CARIBIC to enable an extended instrument package.
